Myspace Rant!

So I have been doing the whole Myspace thing for about 8 months now. For the most part it’s been fine. I managed to not make a disaster of my profile page like 90% of the rest of Myspacers have. I enjoy browsing the bands and film maker’s sites there are listed. Cheese It even has their own Myspace page for pimping of the Stupid Hobbitsess Videos (though I think the Youtube versions get more hits). The concept of Myspace works very well and I enjoy checking it and keeping in touch with friends.

That being said….. Why are there so many [bleep]-tards on there?!?!?! Let’s go over a few bullet points about Myspace shall we?

If I have not met you in person, or at least know you so well that I talk to you on a regular basis, I have no need to add you as a friend. This is important because I regularly get invites from people that are “LOL yur in a costume that’s cool! Be my friend” Or the less offensive ones of “Hey Club buddy, I do that too!” Sorry, even though the 501st is a tight knit club, there are still 5000 of us out there and that means probably a good 4900 that I haven’t met. I like the 501st all well and good and you may be like me but, but let’s be honest, if I met me on the street at random, I may not be inclined to talk to me. ESPECIALLY do not send a friend request without a message as well that says “hey, I am so and so.” Just getting random requests does nothing for me.

If you post this Bulletin, Hot Women will have sex in your back yard! Snopes is your friend! Back in the early days of e-mail, people would send out the standard “Open this e-mail and you will instantly get $50,000 in your bank account” types of e-mails. These have migrated to Myspace in the way of Bulletins! Apparently there are millions of Sick kids with Bill Gates’ money that want to send chain messages to the world! It’s fake, really.

Spam Spam Spam, Myspace Messages, Spam and Spam. Yup, the spammers have found their way into the myspace message system. Not surprising really, but they come in three flavors, one less entertaining than the others.

You have a new Myspace Message! It’s Viagra Just for You! Apparently Belinda on myspace is concerned with the size of my member…..ship status and thinks I need enhancements! Nothing new here, just the usual spam mail. This is the boring one.

You have a new Myspace Message! Hey there Handsome! Now Belinda is sending me a message because she thinks my myspace profile looks cool and so I must want to hang out with her cause, like, you know, the picture I have is so totally hot!. She has hot pics of her and her BFF (Jill?) on an isolated island together where they had to sponge bathe each other. I should check out the link she sent. This would be fine and dandy if I hadn’t gotten this message on the Cheese It profile page. Which has no pictures, or any personal information.

You have a new Friend Request! Lillian wants to be your friend! Wow, this incredibly hot babe who is wearing next to nothing wants to be my friend! Her profile looks pretty standard……….. and she only has one picture up………….. and her about me section says something about a profile on another site that allows naked photos! It’s amazing that she would pick ME to be her friend! She must really like me! Oh… wait, she has a few other friends… The list if growing…. Now there are comments? People are actually accepting her friend requests? Not only are they accepting, but leaving comments like this person is REAL! I feel bad for the girls whose photos are being used for this, because there are only like 5 photos that get rotated and all have different names. I don’t know which is sadder, that spammers are using photos and accounts to do this, or that there are morons on Myspace that fall for it because either 1: they want to add to their list of 679936320 friends, or 2: they actually believe this person is real.

So over all, myspace is not bad. There are just so many people registered that it brings the average IQ of myspace down to that of a 3 year old. So please people, help bring this average up. Flag the spam as spam to help Tom Identify the bad guys. Ignore/Deny the spam friend requests. And please, if you honest and truly know me, feel free to add me as a friend, but if we have never met, try getting to know me first!

Missing week

So apparently I have gone missing from the blog in the last week. After the release of Stupid Hobbitsess last week I kind of took a breather. It was nice to step away from the PC and just relax! I did play a little on the 360, but hey, can you really ask me to completely unplug? So here is a run down of the last week.

Sarah and I got out last weekend on the holiday to hit up the Ren Faire down in Spotsylvania. It was just a day trip but we still dressed up for it. I wish I had gotten more pictures of course, but it was fun none the less. It’s a very small faire with lots of little booths with vendor stuff. It was nice to just get out and get some fresh air. I did get to show a few arrorws which in turn gave me a nasty bruise on the inside of my upper left arm, yay bow string! Towards the later part of the day the heat started to take its toll and we packed up to head back. On the way back we stopped off at Ikea and picked up some new house wares. I loves me some Ikea, I think we paid about 60 cents and filled the truck! (just kidding)

Most of the week was spent in Misery because of allergies. I finally broke down and went on the Claritin kick. While it is a total god send in how I can breathe and function again, it sucked getting used to it. The first few days I was pretty loopy.

My shoulder is killing me now because I went a little overboard on playing pool. It has been a long standing tradition to go and play pool for lunch every Tuesday. I have been doing this for about 2 years now (maybe even more). Well, last week on Friday it was a slow day so we decided to go again. Then on Saturday, Paul calls me up and asks to go shoot pool. Then Sunday Andrew and I have started a tradition of going to play pool and eat brunch. So in one week’s time I was playing pool 4 out of the 7 days! Towards the end there it showed too. I was worn down.

This last weekend was very lackadaisical. I had nothing planned and stuck to that plan! Sarah wasn’t feeling well so I did my best to take care of her. We even managed to do a Video Teleconference with my parents while they were visiting Gina in California. Does that count as her meeting my parents? Sunday I did nothing but play some games and do laundry. I needed to work on Salie in Lord of the Rings online to get him up to speed so that filming can continue.

Interesting note and something that maybe you guys can explain. Why is it that teenagers feel the need to argue even if they know, and have been proven, they are wrong? Seriously! There was a shot in pool where the 9 ball was sitting near the side pocket. It was very close to the corner bumper of the pocket and from the angle I was shooting at, it would have caused it to hit the bumper and roll out, instead of going in. So I shot for something else. Andrew asked why I didn’t go for the 9. I explained why I didn’t and he didn’t understand, instead saying that it would have gone in. After explaining again, he still didn’t get it. So after the game was done I re-set the ball in the exact location and lined up the cue. He then spent the next 10 minutes trying to sink the 9 to no avail. Even now it claims that “it should have gone in” even though he proved to himself that it wouldn’t. WHY???????

On Spiderman 3

Ok, I have been asked enough about my opinion on Spiderman 3 that I will do a full up post about it (as opposed to the one I did a while back). So, a little back story on my spider fandom. I Love Spiderman. I was into photography and science when I was in school, I was the geeky kid and every time I tried to Microwave a spider and get it to bite me it only ended in a messy microwave. With the exception of a few years of black out, I have been collecting Spiderman comics for a long while and I am fascinated with the Black suit. I loved it when he got it, I loved it when Felicia gave him a new version of it that wasn’t all angsty. I even followed the 3-4 Different origins of the costume through the different media forms. (Cartoon, Video games, Movies, Etc.) I actually own 1 Spiderman Costume and will have another one shortly.

When it comes to the movies, I realize that, for a movie, you have to alter a few things. Some story lines need to be condensed or changed so they fit in the confines of the script. The first movie was good. They established the characters, the origin was very close to the comics (comics=Radioactive spider, Movie=Genetically enhanced spider. Back in the day radio activity was a big thing with the cold war and such), and they paved the way for some great story lines. Green Goblin was a great choice as a starter villain since he was around at the beginning and could lead into many different storylines. Unfortunately they fell into the standard movie pratfall and killed off the villain. I don’t know why they feel the need to do this! They never kill the villain in the comics. At least, not in a way that they can’t come back. They did it in Batman, in Spiderman, etc.

Spiderman 2 was amazing. They already established the characters, so there was no really awkward introductions. They brought in Doc Oc, who is another great villain. Even approached the idea of Spidey having issues with his powers. You really felt was he was going through and saw the pressures of the costume. The side story of Harry having father issues was a tad distracting but forgivable. (In the comics, since Goblin didn’t die, he was in jail, everyone knew who he was and Harry knew he was a bad guy). One scene I wasn’t fond of was the subway thing where Peters mask was off and everyone did the whole “We won’t tell” thing. BS. There would be about 30 Cell phone camera flashes going off and J.J. would have front page stories for a month! And, of course, they kill off the bad guy, again.

We saw Spiderman 3 on Opening night, not the midnight show but I was still excited to see it. THERE WILL BE SPOILERS HERE, If you haven’t seen the movie yet, stop here! So, lets start with the good. Sandman! The unsung villain. Victim of circumstance, forced to do what he has to for the betterment of his family. Hard luck case that just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. Everything involving Sandman was great (ok, the flying thing was a little weird, but I’ll allow it). If the movie focused on Sandman and only had very minor side plots it would have been a truly Amazing Spectacular movie!! But the exec’s forced Sam Rami to add in Venom, and that meant a whole new story line involving the black suit. Meanwhile we still have a brooding Harry Osborn who is all kinds of Linkin Park about loosing his dad and Peter being the reason. Never mind the fact that for the last few months/years The fracking butler knew the whole time what had happened. I wanted to smack him for not saying something earlier and maybe sparing Harry the trouble of having to fight Peter. So for the whole New Goblin thing…..Could have been a cool new Movie based HERO character without the whole being a bad guy first. (Still think there is no way he would have snatched peter off his scooter….HELLO! Spidey Sense!!! )

The black suit. This is where I am a little touchy. I realize that we can’t do the whole Secret Wars thing for the movie so an asteroid as an origin is fine, they even used it in the cartoon. The look and feel of the symboite was even good. I loved how it mimicked his old costume even! But that would be where the good stopped. One of the benefits of the black suit was that it could mimic clothing. ANY clothing. Peter would just think of something and bam, that’s what he was wearing. No need for new clothes, no need to duck in somewhere and change! This way he was always wearing the suit and it could bond with him. The symboite LOVED Peter, it loved being (the goddamn) Spiderman. It gave Peter the extra strength and made him a little extra angry. It didn’t turn him into the lead singer of My Chemical Romance! (The shot of him pulling the hair down into his face made me groan)

A perfect opportunity was lost here as well. In the comics, Peter went to see Reed Richards, of the Fantastic Four, to have him examine the suit. So here we have two HUGE comic book movies, from the same publisher, where the comic versions actually intertwine. WHY NOT HAVE AN APPEARANCE??? It would have been a great primer for the new FF movie! Simply replace Doc Connors with Richards and you are good to go! Very poor planning on their part. It’s not that I don’t like Doc Connors. He is another hard luck Villain that deserves some screen time, but it didn’t fit with the story!

Now, Venoms origin was dead on! Eddie Brock hated Peter (and wasn’t all that fond of Spidey) and the whole bell tower church thing was pulled right from the comics. Topher Grace even did a pretty good job of portraying Eddies arrogance and attitude! I am willing to forgive some of the relationship between Peter and the Symboite being left out because of time. When I say that the black suit loved Peter, I meant it. It was a bond. Like that of a girlfriend you had been dating for a very long time. Those feeling don’t go away even if that person was slowly trying to kill you/drive you crazy. In the comics, Peter went to the bell tower because he knew that the sonics of the bells would drive the suit away……at the cost of his own life. The bells of deafening, and the sound was also killing Peter. When the suit leaves him, it realizes this and drags Peter to safety BEFORE bonding with Brock. But that’s ok, time constraints kept that out. The reason that this is important is that it becomes leverage in the future fights with Venom where Peter uses this love to Defeat Brock. In the comics Peter actually invites the suit to come back to him and it causes inner turmoil in Venom because it had already fully bonded with Brock. But I digress.

Venom looked weird in the movie. I think this is because of the way Venom has always been drawn. He is HUGE, very bulky, and his head and jaw are grossly proportioned. This isn’t something you can do in the movies and easily switch between actor and CG. So it just looked weird. Also, as I mentioned in the last post, it’s WE. The Symboite talks to Brock in his head. They are of two minds, they are of two voices. They both hate Spiderman, They want Peter dead. It’s not I, it’s We. This is very important! It was just brushed over. The other thing that drove me batty was the over abundance of mask off shots. Spiderman doesn’t take off his mask. This is why it was such a HUGE deal in the Civil War comics. If he is wearing the suit, he wears the whole suit. The shots of him looking over the city (with a huge crowd of people) with no Mask on were annoying. Same goes for Venom! The strands of the suit clinging to his face was just distracting. And WAY overdone. I realize that this was all done because they wanted the actors to have “face” time, but really, if you are playing Spiderman, resign yourself to the fact that you are wearing a mask!

Last point of criticism, Gwen Stacy. WHY OH WHY WAS SHE IN THE MOVIE???? Gwen was one of Peters first girl friends. She falls in the timeline while Pete was still in school. He was on again off again with Mary Jane and started seeing Gwen while MJ was with Harry. They were quite serious. Green Goblin kidnapped her and threw her off a building.

She Died!

Green Goblin Killed Her!

She was dead BEFORE Peter started dating MJ seriously.

So really, why bring her in. if you wanted a love interest for Pete, there is always Betty Brant! She was in the movie, and there was even a spark with her and Peter. There was no reason to have this completely meaningless storyline. She was long gone before Eddie Brock, they never dated.

So, the rest of the good? The graphics were awesome! The depth of the characters were very good. There were times that you really felt for the different characters. The fight scenes were amazing. It was a great movie from all of these stand points and is a great addition to the Spidey Trilogy. But if they fixed all the above points, it would have been the best one. As it stands now, it was good, I’ll be getting in on DVD to add to the rest, but for the most part it was like Return of the Jedi. It continued the story, wrapped up some loose ends and the writing and story made you go WTF??

Perfect!

Oh hey

Almost forgot

I’m Older now

And this last weekend didn’t suck!

So ummm yeah!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

So, a funny story for you. We all know about the water heater disaster from last weekend. Well, ever since they finished up with all of that there was this strange noise like air in the pipes coming from the tub faucet. (also a new drip). On Wednesday evening I asked them to come take a look at it. The office told me that it would be the next day. Since I could still take a shower with no problems, I figured that was cool. Well, that night it was pretty warm out. It was pretty warm inside too. A little too warm. Hmmm Maybe I should turn up the AC. Wow, it’s blowing out air, but it’s not cold. Lets crank it up some more. Nope, not doing the trick. [Sigh].

Ok so I leave a note on the shower asking them to take a look at the AC as well. Thursday, I am driving home and I see a new Voice Mail. It’s the Maintenance guy saying that the AC unit is fried and they are just going to replace it (Yay!) but that they won’t be able to until Monday! (boo) In the meantime they put in a window AC unit to keep things cool.

This started the laughing.

When I got home I went into the bathroom to check the tub. No more noise and no drip! Unfortunately, the cold water knob now doesn’t work!!! Not sure how you would miss that one.

The Laughing intensifies.

I go back down to the office and let them know and they tell me that someone will be out within the hour, and they were right. The downside to all of this (of you can call it that) is that I haven’t be able to get mad at ANYONE! I want so much to be angry but I can’t! I mean, they are fixing everything and doing it quickly enough that it’s hard to be mad. Yeah, some minor mistakes along the way, but they fix those too. So I wonder what is going to happen next!

I laughed for about an hour. It wasn’t the “Wow this is funny” type. it was the “Honey, where’s my shotgun and post office uniform” kind.

Mary Jane is a B$T%H!

So over the last few days I have copious amounts of free time, sort of, while the workmen were trouncing through my apartment. They needed to completely rip out all the padding, dry the carpet, replace the padding and clean the carpet. The first two were done on Monday during the day, the last on Tuesday. This means that I had to sit and watch them do all this. Given that the entertainment unit was still hooked up, I managed to get in some web swinging with Spiderman 3 the game. There are so many reviews out there that are mixed feelings (kind of like how I am about the movie) so I am not going to bore you with the “this part could be better” crap. The coolest part about the game is the web swinging through New York. They rendered out a full Manhattan Island and it looks amazing. You can go down into the subway, ride a train, sling shot from the Bugle to Central park and it all is spectacular!

When Spidey encounters bad guys he has to do his standard hyper agile fighting style and that comes across in the game. Too many times I went through some button mashing and came across a move that I shouted out “Holy CRAP! That was cool!” The missions are interesting and help move the story along, but aren’t so long that you get tired of them. It’s nice because they are broken into parts. Each part advances the story line but isn’t too long, so you can do part 1 of this mission, and part 3 of that one.

Then there is Mary Jane.

There are a series of missions where you have to take Mary Jane for a “Thrill ride.” Now don’t get your hopes up, it’s a E rated game. In these missions, you basically are a shuttle service for MJ. She has an important appointment that she has to get to and instead of calling a cab (or getting that two timing rat Harry to fly her on his magical snowboard) she has to ride on your back. This wouldn’t be so bad if you were going straight to where she needs to go. Nooooo She wants you to Swing Low, close to the ground, then Swing High to the top of that building, now go really fast! The whole time she is screaming out what she wants you to do but yet you have a time limit and have to get her there before the clock runs out. But wait, there’s more! Along the way you collect hearts, when you do what she wants you collect hearts, and there are these big hearts you grab on your way past. If you don’t fill up on hearts before you get to the end point, you fail. So it’s bad enough I have to be her shuttle service, but now if she doesn’t love me enough by the end point, I fail.

Hey MJ, go take the subway like everyone else! I think I will go find Gwyn Stacy or Betty Brant!

Oh, the house is back to normal now. Sarah helped out and took Andrew to his Guitar lesson and Baseball game while I moved all the furniture back to where it was. Everything is back to the usual. Well, as much as you gat get to in my place!

Soggy Bottom Blues

Ok so the weekend was not all that bad. Really! Except for Sunday. No, wait, Sunday was really good to! It was nice and relaxing the whole day. We ended the day watching Children of Men on HD-DVD while Sarah (TG) worked on her paper. Then she put her foot down from the couch and started the chain of events that would lead me to the here and now where I am sitting at work with little to no sleep and a house that is a complete disaster area.

But I am getting ahead of myself.

Friday was Spiderman day! The new movie came out and I had to go see it! Sarah got off work at 9pm and we caught the 10:15 show at the Regal. As much as I wanted to wear the costume (and I am looking damn good in it now!) Sarah talked me out of it. Had it been the Midnight show the night prior, I probably would have done it. The movie was good. Not as good as number 2, but the CG was amazing, the fighting was great, even some of the base story lines were very comic book. I could have done with out the overload of cheese and as much as I like Venom, 1: they screwed up his lines (it’s WE hate spiderman, not I, you are two freaking voices!) and 2: I don’t know that there is a way you could bring that comic body type for Venom to the screen and have it not look off kilter. Outside of that, I liked it! Friday Rating = Great!

Saturday was a busy day with baseball and school work and such. It was also Free Comic book day so I broke routine and went on Sat instead of Sun. Also had Heather stop by to give her a ride to the airport Sunday morning. We hit up Don Pablo’s for Margaritas on Cinco De Mayo. Saturday rating = Good

Sunday was my relax day. I scheduled nothing for the day so that I could just relax, do some simple house stuff and just take a break. The last few weekends had been hectic and I needed some me time. So it was pool in the morning and just chillaxing at home. Doc came over and we did some voice recording for Episode 2. Sarah came over so we could watch Children of Men and it was just a nice night. So I will pause and give Sundays rating now. Sunday rating = Nice

Then, around 11pm Sarah put down her foot.

“Umm, the floor is wet!”

“Oh, something probably spilled, I’ll get a towel.”

“No, I think something is wrong”

It was then I noticed that water was flowing OVER her foot. We jumped up and started moving things faster than Barry Allen hyped up on Krispy Kreams. I called the Maintenance people and rushed them over. Apparently my Water heater blew and dumped it’s contents into my apartment, but yet the faucet figured “oh, the water heater is empty, I should keep filling it” so more and more water kept coming. When the guy got there and opened the closet to turn off the water, it was like out of a movie with all of it rushing out. He was there until about 3am completely replacing the water heater and vacuuming out all of the excess water. They came back around 10am the next morning and ripped out all of the padding and drying off the carpet. Everything that was in my living room and my bedroom is now crammed into other corners so there was room. We were stuck in a hotel last night where I slept for crap (cause you know I got so much sleep on Sunday night). Today they will be replacing pads, super cleaning the carpet and then I get to move everything back into place.

Sunday night, Monday Day rating = TEH SUCK!

Touring DC = Walking

This is an important fact to know before coming to the DC area. There is a LOT of walking involved! Not a little walking, not a few blocks, a LOT of walking. This last weekend I got a visit from my Long Lost sister. (I say that because she is lost in Fresno Clovis California) This is the first time she has come to visit me in like 13 years (Christmas didn’t count, wasn’t my place). So this was a very special visit. Gina has also never been to the DC area so it was a monumental occasion! (see what I did there?) She came into town because my Nephew got invited to play with his school orchestra at the Kennedy Center. She flew in as a surprise to see him and to visit me so we went and did the whirlwind DC tour!

I picked up Noah early on Saturday and brought him back to my place. Andrew had a baseball game that day so Noah got to see his cousin play (and win!). Afterwards I dropped them off and went to pick up Gina. She was flying into Dulles so it was only like 30 min. Noah had no clue that his mom was coming in so it was a huge surprise! Then we headed downtown. This is where the walking comes in. Gina wanted to visit the Capitol Building so that she could sing her “I’m just a bill” song so that required driving there first. I found a great place to park near there. She also wanted to get to the Lincoln memorial and see things along the way. I mentioned the amount of walking and she said it was ok. (I even reiterated it twice). Somewhere around the WWII memorial everyone started complaining about being tired of walking [grin]. We finally made it down to see Santa Lincoln and decided to grab a cab and take it back to the truck. We drove over to the Hard Rock and had a great dinner (I love my all access pass!) and then took Noah back to his Hotel and went home to crash.

Sunday was mostly just Gina and I. Andrew had some homework and such to take care of so after morning Pool we dropped him off and headed out. First stop was the comic store to Visit TG (and get comics, but mostly visit TG). We went downtown and tried to hit some museums but sadly most of them are close on Sunday. American History was being renovated and the rest just weren’t open. We did get to see the Top of the Old Post office and the White House. After that we went to Old Towne Alexandria where we walked through some antique stores and had some great Thai food. At one point we did try and stop by to see Noah. He was practicing with the orchestra and said he would be out for the rest of the evening so we went on our own.

Monday was the big day! We took our time getting up and got ready to head to the Kennedy Center. That place is huge! (and Parking ain’t cheap!) Noah’s group was up first and fourth so we got to see him twice. I even managed to sneak in a video camera so that I could tape the whole thing. I have both of his performances on tape now, including a few good close up’s of him. After the show we tried to hit the Daughters of The American Revolution museum and of course, it was closed. With all that walking behind us, we headed home to change clothes and relax for a bit. Then went down to Alexandria for a walk down King Street and Dinner with Doc and Diz. Doc didn’t believe that I would actually have family visit me so he needed proof. We had a great dinner at the Alexandria Fish Market and then took a small (very small) walk on the water front. At around 10:30 we called it quits and went home.

Tuesday was all relaxville we woke up late, I took Gina to visit my work. She got a little creeped out by the basement and the mushrooms. And the server room was a little intimidating. We went and picked up some more gifts for the boys back home and then headed back to wait for Andrew to get home from school. Gina got the chance to see Serenity (well, most of it anyways) and then we were off to Guitar practice before taking her to the airport! After dropping her off we went back to the house and collapsed!

What a weekend!
